What are 10 things I should know in order to grow in the corporate world?

Updated: May 11, 2020

Growing the corporate world requires more than just the technical skills. While these are important at the start of the career, the later part of career requires great people and management skills.

So, what are the key factors to grow in the corporate world :

  • Ask for help : If you are under stress or having depression or can not cope up with your professional demands, ask for help from mentors in your professional or personal circle.

You can not deliver, let alone grow, in your career if you are not in the best of the mental health.

  • Identify the pain - at entry or senior level, try to find what is the pain points for your manager, customer, company. Work on improving it/ changing it and you will be noticed by those who matter,

  • Learn new skills - If you depend on your current skills to grow in career, then its already too late. You can't grow in future with skills of past,

  • Skills matter more than anything - at the start of your career, your core skills in the domain is what gets you to the next level,

  • Relations matter more than skills - as you grow higher in career, relations & network matter more than the technical skills,

  • Don’t compromise - trust your gut. If you are working under a sadistic boss or in such environment, leave. Frustration and anxiety is as infectious as success and enthusiasm,

  • Create a life outside work - while these days, working long hours is seen as a virtue, it will kill your career. Be active in your social life, connecting with those in your professional domain & similar interests,

  • Attend meetups - This should be one of the most important tasks in your weekly calendar. Startups pitch at such events, learn what they are doing. Understand how it might impact your current job, industry and career. Look for opportunities with them to collaborate,

  • Workout : Take care of your health. There is a reason why the health and fitness startups are the hot favorites for the start up capital. A friend, who I met this Monday, has a mandate to deploy 1,000,000,000 Euros (1 Billion Euros) for startups focused on health and better living,

  • Don’t take loans, avoid debt - The only way you can be free to do any of the above is if you are not mentally stressed about a monthly payment for a home, car loan, Invest in learning.

For a successful career in Germany, it is necessary to learn German language to ensure that the whole market is open for you. The German recruiters always have a preference for those who can speak the language. While the official communication language in companies might be English, most of the employees are Germans. Hence, its necessary to not only excel at the job (in English), but also create a great professional network with your colleagues (mostly Germans).

Your learning will define your earning.

It always helps to have a mentor, who has worked and lived in Germany for some of the best brands. For personal consultation with Arun Mahajan, book a time with him.
