Was it easy for you to find employment in Germany?

Updated: May 11, 2020

It took Arun 6 months to find a job in Germany.

This was in 2014. The main reasons it took him so long was because :

  1. He relocated to Germany in Jan, 2014,

  2. He is a finance professional,

  3. He did not study in Germany,

  4. He did not know German language,

  5. He did not have a German network,

Most importantly though :

  • Did not have a mentor at that time, who could guide me on ways to find jobs in Germany.

As a newcomer to country (and a cars lover), the only companies he wanted to work for were Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche or the other big German brands. This over the top expectation with the above mentioned constraints, meant that my job search mode was :

  1. not focused,

  2. did not take in account that these companies work in a traditional manner (got to know this from one of my company’s consultant who had worked for Mercedes for 18 years).

Having been introduced to e-commerce in India (working for Flipkart before moving to Germany), led him to focus more on his core technical and business knowledge strengths.

And, landed his first job in Germany in July,2014.

Since then, he has worked for :

  • 2 startups in Berlin,

  • Amazon (Munich, Germany),

  • Zalando (Berlin, Germany),

and currently working on project for one of the largest real estate companies in Germany (on his personal time), which is providing him insights in the German property market.

It always helps to have a mentor, who has worked and lived in Germany for some of the best brands. For personal consultation with Arun Mahajan, book a time with him.
